ISSUES: Year-Round Calendar

All-year Schooling Fading Out; Some
Texas Districts Don't See Benefits
A decade ago, it was the wave of the future.
Now, the year-round calendar is becoming a
thing of the past, at least in Texas. The idea
was simple: Sharply cut back on the traditional
summer break, and students will forget less
and learn more. For a time in the 1990s, it was
hard to find a large school district that wasn't
at least considering a move to year-round
schooling. MORE

All-year School Enrollees Decrease
As enrollment continues to decline in Rockingham
County's year-round schools, district officials are
looking at more changes to shore up the program.
There are 233 fewer students attending the six
year-round elementary schools this year than
last year. MORE

Rethinking Year-Round Schools
It's described by some as a cost-containment
method, a quick fix and a gimmick. But others
call it a modern approach to education and a
way to improve learning retention. MORE

Lockett Ending All-Year School
After making history eight years ago as one of
the first elementary schools in the country to
convert to year-round education, Johnson Lockett
School in New Orleans will return to a traditional
calendar. MORE

Death Bell Tolls For Year-Round Schools
The opponents of year-round schools in
Orange County triumphed twice Tuesday night.
The Orange County School Board unanimously
approved a new common calendar for most
schools in 1996-97, an action that will eliminate
year-round education for most Orange County
elementary schools. MORE

Year-Round Schools,
Year-Round Headaches
Year-round schools, once touted as a better way
to teach students and save money, are causing
headaches for some Orange County teachers
who complained in a survey released Thursday
that they are "burning out." MORE

District Supports Common Calendar;
Schools Could Change Schedules
Next Year
Volusia County students would all attend classes
on a common school calendar next year if the
School Board approves a recommendation
presented Friday. MORE

Parents Turn Back Calendars; Year-
Round Education Loses Favor Amid Furor
When Seminole County changed the color of 8-
year-old Jordan Hogan's school calendar from
blue to green, it made his parents see red.
The Partin Elementary student was forced to
start school in July, not August, which conflicted
with his family's planned, paid-for
August vacation. MORE
